The goal of OPTIMA is to ensure that Scotland and the UK has a strong and sustained pipeline of future innovators and research leaders in optical medical imaging encompassing the molecular, cellular, preclinical and clinical applications of physical science.
To fulfil this aim; alongside excellence in training and supervision in world-leading scientific environments, OPTIMA features embedded, bespoke training in healthcare innovation and entrepreneurship delivered in partnership with the University of Edinburgh Business School and the University of Strathclyde Hunter Centre.
This unique entrepreneurial training will breed a new generation of physical scientists, trained within a clinically focused setting, with the ability to fully exploit Scotland and the UK’s research and commercial potential in healthcare technologies.
We are proud to endorse the “Scotland CAN DO” agenda and are eager to collaborate with other partners. In particular we would like to set up collaborative projects via our PhD students in the form of internships (beginning 2017). These will offer a high-calibre resource to partners to assist with a strategic project at no extra cost.
- In 2014 OPTIMA was awarded almost £5M from the EPSRC, MRC and SFC to train the next generation of scientific entrepreneurs.
- Over 8 years we will be training 60 research scientists in optical medical imaging and healthcare innovation.
- Our academic leaders at the Universities of Edinburgh and Strathclyde have not only published over 1300 papers and received more than £110M in research grant income; they have filed over 50 patents and spun-out 6 companies attesting to their innovative drive.
